The water events are organised on the Derwent River, offering active participation to the visitors as spectators or competitors.

History
One of the oldest public holidays in the country, the Royal Hobart Regatta, was introduced in 1828 by Sir John Franklin, the then-governor of Tasmania. The day was declared a public holiday to hold competitions between the local sailors and Royal Navy merchants. The audience who came to witness the competition were provided with free food and beer. Since 1879, the month for the Regatta changed to January or February from December. The regatta also hosted Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1963.
