Royal Hobart Regatta

The Royal Hobart Regatta, features a series of aquatic and water sports competitions, such as rowing, yachting, and jet skiing. It is one of the oldest sporting events held annually in Hobart, Tasmania. This event has a lot of relevance for the populace in the region as it encompasses a lot of historical significance. The regatta boasts a footfall of thousands of visitors partaking in competitions, watching fireworks, and listening to music. Visitors can also savour delicacies from the event's various food stalls.

Royal Hobart Regatta 2023

The Royal Hobart Regatta is observed and celebrated for three days on the second weekend in February. This year the Royal Hobart Regatta will take place from the 11th to the 13th of February. Around 40,000 people attend the event annually as the audience partakes in the spectacle of a sail of boats of all sizes and shapes. The water events are organised on the Derwent River, offering active participation to the visitors as spectators or competitors.

• On-the-water events include water sports such as Jet Ski, Kayak, and canoeing.
• In the water event features a Trans Derwent Swim from Montagu to Regatta Grounds stretching 1.8 Kilometers.
• Besides the water events, including entertainment, a concert, and various other activities such as log chops, slide shows, greasy poles and tug-of-war.
• Above-the-water events entail demonstrations from the RAAF, parachute jumps and other air-borne activities.

History

One of the oldest public holidays in the country, the Royal Hobart Regatta, was introduced in 1828 by Sir John Franklin, the then-governor of Tasmania. The day was declared a public holiday to hold competitions between the local sailors and Royal Navy merchants. The audience who came to witness the competition were provided with free food and beer. Since 1879, the month for the Regatta changed to January or February from December. The regatta also hosted Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1963.
